Back in 1976, Sweet Auburn was a National Historic Landmark that reflected the heritage of the African Americans in Atlanta. It was John Wesley Dobbs who gave Sweet Auburn its name to refer to the richest Negro street the world over. Churches along the avenue helped maintain their heritage including the First Congregational and the Big Bethel AME. The popular Top Hat Club of 1938 is now the Royal Peacock Club that is flocked by African American performers to feature black popular music and its style development. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Life Insurance Company is one significant commercial building in the district that is the second largest in the United States.
